Rage Against the Machine takes it to the Streets at RNC

YouTube Preview Image

After having their power cut Rage Against the Machine literally “took it to the streets” at the Republican National Convention. They risked what could have come off has a pretty silly/hoakey sing-a-long and performed 2 songs accappella while in the crowd.
The cast of Spring Awakening did the same thing last year during the teamsters strike ( but there is may have been expected to be a little cheesey)
So what do you think? Silly or Serious? At least they put their mouth where their mouth is… I wonder if the election will coincide with the release of a RATM: Greatest Hits?

The Mars Volta: Live at Terminal 5 ( they played 1 song for a month last night)

The Mars Volta
( this is how the Mars Volta makes me feel)

I have decided, After seeing The Mars Volta at least once a year for the last 4 or five years (roughly 20 hours of show, yet only 6 songs were played) that The Mars Volta are the only band that can do what The Mars Volta does. It does’nt matter how familiar you are with the recorded material. Admittedly I am not that familiar yet I have most of their recordings. My point is when they step on stage for what will sure be a marathon progressive latina alternative jam session, if you are not in the room, the experience can not be communicated to you. Which reminds me , is there a live album or DVD? There should be a theatrical release concert movie. It would be almost impossible to sit through and be a box office nightmare however if handled correctly could redefine the concert movies.
What this band does create is art in the purist sense of the word. It is also ephemeral. Like the guy with the rocks and sticks sculpture or the sidewalk chalk artist except much louder.
The Mars Volta show is not for the faint of heart. And I commend the soldiers in the band that commit to bringing the rock for 3 straight hours with no breaks ( in the songs) and minimal banter on stage.
Another observation I have of the band is every time I see them they seem to pick up another member. 1st it’s another guitarist, then a horn player/percussionist then another keyboard player. All of which seems to allow them to play longer. So much longer.

Brooklyn Vegan has better pictures from the show as I was in the back looking for a place to sit down.

Do You Remember Rock & Roll?

If not, let the Alabama Shakes remind you. They’re selling out shows across the country and their debut album isn’t even out for another couple months. I managed to see these blues-infused soul grabbers play a jam packed show at the Indy in San Francisco last night. Best overpriced scalped ticket I ever bought! Don’t [...]

Did You Hear That? Best of 2011 Part 2 M83 – “Midnight City”

Continuing work on my best of heard in 2011, next up is M83  “Midnight City”. My complete spotify playlist can be heard here. Oh, hey there, East Coast! Looks like you had a bit of an earthquake, huh? Don’t worry, I’m not gonna razz you about it. You’re ill-equipped for the tremors. A big quake would be way more catastrophic there than it would be here. You’re right to be a little jumpy about it. Well, I’m no [...]

Did You Hear That: Adele “21″ a brief review

From the first beat of “Rolling in the Deep,” the first track on Adele’s new album, “21”, it is clear that even at such a young age (all of 22 now), singer/songwriter Adele continues to be a force stronger than she may know. As “21” dips into the style of the country South with a [...]

So Sayeth Pam: The Raveonettes “Forget That You’re Young”

I like a young American band that makes vintage-sounding reverbalicious melodies. Specifically if those bands are Crystal Stilts, Vivian Girls or Dum Dum Girls. Call me a nationalist but I just happen to prefer their take on fuzz pop to that of their Danish predecessors, the Raveonettes. Which is not to say I dislike the [...]
