YouTube Preview Image
“Bring your friends, bring your children, and bring foot spray, because it’s going to be funky,” – Do you need more of an invitation than that? No. Prince announced a world tour from the stage of the legendary Apollo Theatre.

Joining the R&B star’s “favorite new artist” Janelle Monae, will be guests Maceo Parker, Cassandra Wilson, Sheila E., Mint Condition, Esperanza Spalding, Sinbad and others.

LiveNation’s Twitter, New York City will be among the locations. Additional details will be revealed in the coming weeks.

Bryan Ferry – “Song To The Siren” (Feat. Roxy Music, Jonny Greenwood, David Gilmour, Nile Rodgers)

logo1.jpg
I wish I could say that I was originally introduced to this song by the original Tim Buckley version, but not so much. This song does however mean a ton to me because of the This Mortal Coil version from 1984′s “It’ll End In Tears” (that version was used excellently in the film version of The Lovely Bones)

With that said. Bryan Ferry brings together a group of luminaries to this chill out anthem. Guitar Heros David Gilmour and Johnny Greenwood offer lush guitar soundscapes. Nile Rodgers holds down his smooth grooves ( not to be confused with smooth jazz) Roxy Music add the synths and the synths are good! This track definitely would have been comfortable on that Avalon album from 1981.

Olympia is out 10/26 via Astralwerks. You can stream it at NPR.

Preview The Roots & John Legend- Wake Up!

Wake Up Album Art
There are a few 3rd quarter releases I am looking forward to. Besides waiting for Mark Ronson, Maximum Balloon there is Wake Up! A collection of soul covers from the 60′s and 70′s.

Although the preview cd I received only had 4 tracks on it the lead single, a cover of Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes “Wake Up Everybody” could not have been handled in more capable hands. It sounds more relevant and contemporary than anything written and on the radio today.

The album features one original song “Shine” which is also in the upcoming documentary “Waiting for Superman”

Do You Remember Rock & Roll?

If not, let the Alabama Shakes remind you. They’re selling out shows across the country and their debut album isn’t even out for another couple months. I managed to see these blues-infused soul grabbers play a jam packed show at the Indy in San Francisco last night. Best overpriced scalped ticket I ever bought! Don’t [...]

Did You Hear That? Best of 2011 Part 2 M83 – “Midnight City”

Continuing work on my best of heard in 2011, next up is M83  “Midnight City”. My complete spotify playlist can be heard here. Separating the fact that this song is used in a Victoria’s Secret commercial. it’s still pretty great. It was produced by  Justin Meldal Johnson who also produced my favorite Big Sir remix [...]

Love Letter from the West Coast

Oh, hey there, East Coast! Looks like you had a bit of an earthquake, huh? Don’t worry, I’m not gonna razz you about it. You’re ill-equipped for the tremors. A big quake would be way more catastrophic there than it would be here. You’re right to be a little jumpy about it. Well, I’m no [...]

Did You Hear That: Adele “21″ a brief review

From the first beat of “Rolling in the Deep,” the first track on Adele’s new album, “21”, it is clear that even at such a young age (all of 22 now), singer/songwriter Adele continues to be a force stronger than she may know. As “21” dips into the style of the country South with a [...]

So Sayeth Pam: The Raveonettes “Forget That You’re Young”

I like a young American band that makes vintage-sounding reverbalicious melodies. Specifically if those bands are Crystal Stilts, Vivian Girls or Dum Dum Girls. Call me a nationalist but I just happen to prefer their take on fuzz pop to that of their Danish predecessors, the Raveonettes. Which is not to say I dislike the [...]
