Santogold Answers My Question

Santogold
Kind of… In an earlier santi post we wondered out loud why LES/Brooklyn hipster poster girl would work with Ashlee Simpson. All do respect to both parties but how the f**k did that happen? In an interview with Popjustice.com Santi kinda explains herself and surprise surprise, her reasons are the same as mine for dating a woman in college that managed a Godiva Chocolatier… Chocolate and money.

Death Cab For Cutie Open Windows on Current TV

Current TV has been promoting their Death Cab For Cutie Special “Open Windows” pretty hard so I am feeling the peer pressure to write about it and smoke newport cigarettes. The half hour program which original airing strategically coincided with the bands new lp release “Narrow Windows” this past tuesday breaks Current TV’s traditional POD form of 5 to 7 minute content. However it is keeping with the Current Fix’s other music specials like the Portishead and Radiohead simulcast.

Horses Mouth: Jimmy Iovine Speaks about the State Of the Industry

The thing is…In this 20 minute interview, it does not sound like he is completely convinced by his own words. ( should we be?) Idolator has broke down the highlights but an example of Mr. Iovine’s uncertainty is:
On staying current with his label’s priorities
“Four million people watched Soulja Boy.” (NB: The official “Crank That” video currently has 32 million-plus views.)
you would think that if that Soulja Boy is one of IGA’s larger offerings he would at least brag about the 32MM views.

On who should take the blame when an album flops
“The hardest thing for any artist to do is look in the mirror and say [the reason for the album flopping] was me…. Everybody wants to be Shaggy and say, ‘It wasn’t me.’ …. ‘My album was great, it wasn’t me, it was that building.’”

” It wasn’t me?” ” The Music is Stupid…?” Simple thought would be for the label to sign talent and nurture talent from the ground up and not just chase the next big thing.

Who is the next music industry big wig to speak out to appease stockholders with a ” everything is under control” interview?

Do You Remember Rock & Roll?

If not, let the Alabama Shakes remind you. They’re selling out shows across the country and their debut album isn’t even out for another couple months. I managed to see these blues-infused soul grabbers play a jam packed show at the Indy in San Francisco last night. Best overpriced scalped ticket I ever bought! Don’t [...]

Did You Hear That? Best of 2011 Part 2 M83 – “Midnight City”

Continuing work on my best of heard in 2011, next up is M83  “Midnight City”. My complete spotify playlist can be heard here. Separating the fact that this song is used in a Victoria’s Secret commercial. it’s still pretty great. It was produced by  Justin Meldal Johnson who also produced my favorite Big Sir remix [...]

Love Letter from the West Coast

Oh, hey there, East Coast! Looks like you had a bit of an earthquake, huh? Don’t worry, I’m not gonna razz you about it. You’re ill-equipped for the tremors. A big quake would be way more catastrophic there than it would be here. You’re right to be a little jumpy about it. Well, I’m no [...]

Did You Hear That: Adele “21″ a brief review

From the first beat of “Rolling in the Deep,” the first track on Adele’s new album, “21”, it is clear that even at such a young age (all of 22 now), singer/songwriter Adele continues to be a force stronger than she may know. As “21” dips into the style of the country South with a [...]

So Sayeth Pam: The Raveonettes “Forget That You’re Young”

I like a young American band that makes vintage-sounding reverbalicious melodies. Specifically if those bands are Crystal Stilts, Vivian Girls or Dum Dum Girls. Call me a nationalist but I just happen to prefer their take on fuzz pop to that of their Danish predecessors, the Raveonettes. Which is not to say I dislike the [...]
