Live: Mark Ronson & the Business INTL @ Williamsburg Music Hall

YouTube Preview Image
Mr. Ronson did kill it last night with the Business Intl in tow. With a stage set up that Depeche Mode would have been comfortable behind cica 84, including Simmons drums pads for all! I have to give it to M.R. for having a touring band consisting of so many talented artist in their own right. I have been anxiously awaiting MNDR’s full LP. Spank Rock handled most of the rhymes for the evening. It was a little disconcerting hearing Q-tip’s rap word for word out of Naeem but whatever he owned every other song he performed. Alex Greenwald who is on the last two Ronson Albums handled most of the evening vocals which fit nicely. I didn’t miss Kyle Falconer on Bicycle Song too much. I could have done without Greewald/ Ronson take of the Phantom Planet tent pole “California” but it was well received so they know who their audience.

Ronson keep the music tight and the energy up. He keep shouting out Brooklyn, and the crowd showed him the love back.

Cute Punk Girl Rocks Madison Square Garden with Green Day

This is what I’m talking about. This is the kind of fan engagement that I’m always looking for. The girl in this video who “happened” to know the 10 minute opus that is “Jesus of Suburbia” and gets pulled on stage will remember this forEVER. I get chills just thinking about what her friends must have been thinking when she was up there. And although she held her shit together through the entire song, I imagine she was completely blacked out during the performance.

I hope they gave her that guitar after the show!

Does any one know that girls name?

Sonic Youth to Takeover Origami Vinyl on Tuesday, June 9th

Sonic Youth Take Over Origami Vinyl

Neil seems to have included most everything a skinny panted hipster in Echo park would need to pay tribute to the original skinny panted hipters ( except the band itself ). This event does promise to be cool and there is free pizza ( so one has to assume that the beer can’t be far behind”
From Origami Vinyl:
In celebration of their new album, The Eternal, Sonic Youth will take over our little record shop. For one day only, on June 9th, Origami Vinyl will become Sonic Youth’s House of Shifting Plates and Ridiculous Juice, as dubbed by the band itself. Our wall of featured albums will display selections hand-picked by Thurston, Kim, Lee, Steve and Mark – ranging from Okkyung Lee to John Lennon – as well as a wide range of Sonic Youth and Sonic Youth related releases. The band has also invited their friends Pocahaunted and Shiloe to play sets at the store.

Chester French perform at Steve Madden instore

YouTube Preview Image
~ugh. I was kinda interested in these guys because I recieved the cd the day before this showcase and was mildly impressed. The tight production on the cd from the neptunes and the pop sensiblity of the song writing could make this an enjoyable cd.
Album tracks “Bebee Buell” a mix between baroque pop and indie pop come off strong on the album. “Jimmy Choos” leaves off where weezer got lost about 6 years ago. However one has to wonder about the stratgery of performing that song inside a Steve Madden store ( with Steve in the room ) . They ended up having to explain it was an indictment of women who wear the competiting brand.

Which brings me to the point last nights weak performance. The band seems to hide behind a considerable amount of studio wizardry. Mr. French, if you have to explain the joke to your audience it’s not that funny.

Do You Remember Rock & Roll?

If not, let the Alabama Shakes remind you. They’re selling out shows across the country and their debut album isn’t even out for another couple months. I managed to see these blues-infused soul grabbers play a jam packed show at the Indy in San Francisco last night. Best overpriced scalped ticket I ever bought! Don’t [...]

Did You Hear That? Best of 2011 Part 2 M83 – “Midnight City”

Continuing work on my best of heard in 2011, next up is M83  “Midnight City”. My complete spotify playlist can be heard here. Separating the fact that this song is used in a Victoria’s Secret commercial. it’s still pretty great. It was produced by  Justin Meldal Johnson who also produced my favorite Big Sir remix [...]

Love Letter from the West Coast

Oh, hey there, East Coast! Looks like you had a bit of an earthquake, huh? Don’t worry, I’m not gonna razz you about it. You’re ill-equipped for the tremors. A big quake would be way more catastrophic there than it would be here. You’re right to be a little jumpy about it. Well, I’m no [...]

Did You Hear That: Adele “21″ a brief review

From the first beat of “Rolling in the Deep,” the first track on Adele’s new album, “21”, it is clear that even at such a young age (all of 22 now), singer/songwriter Adele continues to be a force stronger than she may know. As “21” dips into the style of the country South with a [...]

So Sayeth Pam: The Raveonettes “Forget That You’re Young”

I like a young American band that makes vintage-sounding reverbalicious melodies. Specifically if those bands are Crystal Stilts, Vivian Girls or Dum Dum Girls. Call me a nationalist but I just happen to prefer their take on fuzz pop to that of their Danish predecessors, the Raveonettes. Which is not to say I dislike the [...]
