Kanye West’s Surprise Performance At Flavorpill Event

YouTube Preview Image
Tonight at Flavorpill’s (final?) One Step Beyond event at the Natural History Museum featuring The Cool Kids, Kid Sister and A-trak. A cool enough bill for your average freshman Pratt student hipster, and there were plenty. Flavorpill employee of the week Asher Rapkin stepped up his game when he brought up Kanye West during Kid Sister’s floor filler “Pro Nails”. West and Kid Sis finished the set together but then Kanye killed it with 4 or 5 of his own hits. “Stronger”, and “Good Life” literally had the skinny pants screaming from the ceiling.

How I ask you did Mr. Rapkin and his team pull this off with a budget of $127, a 1/2 case of bud light and an iphone? Please someone tell me!

Monster MashUp

The Hood InternetI had know idea that people were still into mash ups. I was sure it was an early turn of the century phenomena that was only celebrated by middle age media executives that wanted to be reminded of how cool Blue Oyster Cult was all set to a out of time 808 beats.

That is true.

Be that as it may there seems to be a new life for Mash Ups found at The Hood Internet. The cool thing about this blog besides their hipster links and the boast about hundreds of thousands of myspace friends is they actually sound like they know what they are doing.

Instead of tired classic rock with stale beats . These guys find current indie rock/ indie pop and mix it with the likes of R.Kelly and Dr. Dre. So most of the music is from this decade.

Besides what seems to be daily post they have a couple of full length releases which I am trying to mauw my way through. One with featuring the group The Pack. I haven’t made it through this yet.

Here are some of the good ones:

Dr Dre vs Fujiya and Miyagi

M.I.A vs New Order

Do You Remember Rock & Roll?

If not, let the Alabama Shakes remind you. They’re selling out shows across the country and their debut album isn’t even out for another couple months. I managed to see these blues-infused soul grabbers play a jam packed show at the Indy in San Francisco last night. Best overpriced scalped ticket I ever bought! Don’t [...]

Did You Hear That? Best of 2011 Part 2 M83 – “Midnight City”

Continuing work on my best of heard in 2011, next up is M83  “Midnight City”. My complete spotify playlist can be heard here. Separating the fact that this song is used in a Victoria’s Secret commercial. it’s still pretty great. It was produced by  Justin Meldal Johnson who also produced my favorite Big Sir remix [...]

Love Letter from the West Coast

Oh, hey there, East Coast! Looks like you had a bit of an earthquake, huh? Don’t worry, I’m not gonna razz you about it. You’re ill-equipped for the tremors. A big quake would be way more catastrophic there than it would be here. You’re right to be a little jumpy about it. Well, I’m no [...]

Did You Hear That: Adele “21″ a brief review

From the first beat of “Rolling in the Deep,” the first track on Adele’s new album, “21”, it is clear that even at such a young age (all of 22 now), singer/songwriter Adele continues to be a force stronger than she may know. As “21” dips into the style of the country South with a [...]

So Sayeth Pam: The Raveonettes “Forget That You’re Young”

I like a young American band that makes vintage-sounding reverbalicious melodies. Specifically if those bands are Crystal Stilts, Vivian Girls or Dum Dum Girls. Call me a nationalist but I just happen to prefer their take on fuzz pop to that of their Danish predecessors, the Raveonettes. Which is not to say I dislike the [...]
