Did You Hear That? Best of 2011 Part 2 M83 – “Midnight City”

Continuing work on my best of heard in 2011, next up is M83  “Midnight City”. My complete spotify playlist can be heard here.

Separating the fact that this song is used in a Victoria’s Secret commercial. it’s still pretty great. It was produced by  Justin Meldal Johnson who also produced my favorite Big Sir remix in the early 00′s.

Did You Hear That? Best of 2011 Part 1 tUnE-yArDs

I’m working on a list of the best of what I heard in 2011. Here is the complete spotify best of 2011 playlist.

tUnE-yArDs W H O K I L L – 4AD

I’ve written quite a bit about Merrill Garbus this year. If my list ended here it would be enough. What Merrill does under the moniker tUnE-yArDs is wholly original. She crafts beats and melodies which could only be her own. I fully believe if not for the success she has garnered in 2011 she would be doing exactly the same thing busking in the BART in Berkley.  tUnE yArDs have not hit critical mass yet.  (I don’t think they have done an american express commercial or the like yet ) but there will be followers. So many followers.

W H O K I L L is truly stunning in every way.

This is why your band sucks. Darren Solomon from Science for Girls put together this project where total strangers post improvised music ( with very limited guildlines) to youtube and the end product is more interesting than trying to find meanings IN RAINBOWS.

Perez Hilton in Talks With Warner Brothers Records

Perez Hilton
Would you let this man recommend music to you?

According to MTV.com Mario Lavendeira ( a.k.a Perez Hilton ) is in talks with Warner Brothers records for his own label imprint. In the name of full disclosure I myself have taken some recommendations from Mr. Hilton. He picks some hits and some misses. The question is will Perez stick to his guns with which acts he plugs, promotes, and disses when the man has his hand in his pocket? BTW Perez you should have negotiate more $$$ up front ( rumoured to be 100k ). Old dusty record executives love to throw money at the next hottest thing that they don’t understand. ” A blog, you call it?”.

Do You Remember Rock & Roll?

If not, let the Alabama Shakes remind you. They’re selling out shows across the country and their debut album isn’t even out for another couple months. I managed to see these blues-infused soul grabbers play a jam packed show at the Indy in San Francisco last night. Best overpriced scalped ticket I ever bought! Don’t [...]

Love Letter from the West Coast

Oh, hey there, East Coast! Looks like you had a bit of an earthquake, huh? Don’t worry, I’m not gonna razz you about it. You’re ill-equipped for the tremors. A big quake would be way more catastrophic there than it would be here. You’re right to be a little jumpy about it. Well, I’m no [...]

Did You Hear That: Adele “21″ a brief review

From the first beat of “Rolling in the Deep,” the first track on Adele’s new album, “21”, it is clear that even at such a young age (all of 22 now), singer/songwriter Adele continues to be a force stronger than she may know. As “21” dips into the style of the country South with a [...]

So Sayeth Pam: The Raveonettes “Forget That You’re Young”

I like a young American band that makes vintage-sounding reverbalicious melodies. Specifically if those bands are Crystal Stilts, Vivian Girls or Dum Dum Girls. Call me a nationalist but I just happen to prefer their take on fuzz pop to that of their Danish predecessors, the Raveonettes. Which is not to say I dislike the [...]
