Katy Perry’s “You’re so Gay” is one of the most annoying songs I have ever heard. Don’t get me wrong…the lyrics mocking metrosexual men and their affection towards H & M are clever but the damn chorus gave me a headache. At about 30 seconds into the original cut of the song all I heard was that irritating chorus chiming in “You’re so Gay” bla bla bla bla bla bla….ughhh. The Dance Remix on the EP gave me an excruciating migraine. The instrumental was semi-bearable but it reminded me of a song I would hear shopping in Urban Outfitters.
Realistically, I can imagine the song being an anthem for gay men and angry women who hate their ex boyfriends but I think it’s a total bomb. Its just one of those songs mocking pop culture that is easily forgettable. I also find “You’re so Gay” a tad insulting, stereotyping gay people into certain gender roles. I have tons of hunky gay friends that are “not that gay” according to Katy Perry’s standards. All and all…not cool.
Despite the annoying title track, Perry does a brilliant cover of the 1986 “The Outfield” song, “Your Love”. Her sound is a combination of Avril Lavigne, Natasha Bedingfield, and The Sounds all rolled into one. It has a catchy beat, making it danceable and memorable. Although Perry’s vocals give the song a modern twist it still has that vintage feel to it. That song is a keeper!
I can certainly see Katy Perry’s potential as an artist- she has a great vocal range and unique sound. Perry just needs to cut back on the “You’re so Gayness” and she’ll be a star.~ Emily Giannusa
