Corinne Bailey Rae -Love Ep is nothing but covers

01 I Wanna Be Your Lover www.pinboardblog.com by PinBoardBlog.com
A wise man once said that in these modern times a band just starting out SHOULD record a cover song. Pick a act or song that your band would like to be associated with, that way when fans of the original song search these vast internets to illegaly download their favorite song… perhaps your version shows up in the search results. The fan of the original clicks your link and Boom you have anew fan.

Corrine Bailey Rae doesn’t need that strategy at all. Her last LP “The Sea” was  amazing and did just fine on it’s own.  The upcoming  The Love EP, a digital-only album of love song covers hits the streets nee mobile devices on Valentines Day.  And she does a pretty true version of Prince’s ” I Want To Be Your Lover” . Which the purple one himself DID NOT play when I saw him at MSG last month. Sooo Prince you owe me one.

CBR breaks down the rest of the ep here.

amy winehouse – back from the underground “it’s my party” cover

It’s My Party Feat Amy Winehouse (Prod Mark Ronson) www.pinboardblog.com by PinBoardBlog.com

Look who crawled up from the darkness… Amy Winehouse! True to form, and working with what seems to be the only producer who can get a performance out of her. Ms Winehouse gives a rendition of Lesley Gore’s 1963 classic “It’s My Party”. She brings a lot of herself to this version. I wonder if how recent this recording is, could it be a left over outtake from the Back To Black sessions? It sounds like the Dap King backing her up instrumentally. The background vocal arrangement is great, very reminiscent of Ray Charles’ “I Can’t Stop Loving You”. I hope it’s an indication that there will be more new material soon. Very soon.

How pure, how simple, how perfectly succinct this sentiment is, it could have been my theme song back in the day.

Did You Hear That: Pebble To A Pearl

Pebble To A Pearl Album Art

Nikka Costa did something good. Very good. Releasing her 3rd Lp free of a major label , instead working with the indie gofunkyyourself records along with Stax Records. Which makes sense because this record stanks of Stax records classics. It’s all there.

Do You Remember Rock & Roll?

If not, let the Alabama Shakes remind you. They’re selling out shows across the country and their debut album isn’t even out for another couple months. I managed to see these blues-infused soul grabbers play a jam packed show at the Indy in San Francisco last night. Best overpriced scalped ticket I ever bought! Don’t [...]

Did You Hear That: Adele “21″ a brief review

From the first beat of “Rolling in the Deep,” the first track on Adele’s new album, “21”, it is clear that even at such a young age (all of 22 now), singer/songwriter Adele continues to be a force stronger than she may know. As “21” dips into the style of the country South with a [...]

So Sayeth Pam: The Raveonettes “Forget That You’re Young”

I like a young American band that makes vintage-sounding reverbalicious melodies. Specifically if those bands are Crystal Stilts, Vivian Girls or Dum Dum Girls. Call me a nationalist but I just happen to prefer their take on fuzz pop to that of their Danish predecessors, the Raveonettes. Which is not to say I dislike the [...]
