Me and Bono are the Same

…Well in one aspect. We will both talk non-stop through a good song so the other people in the room trying to enjoy it, can’t. I have been told this many times. Almost every time. In this ilike vlog Bono does a on the fly “story tellers” of the song “Waves Of Sorrow” . A “new” song recorded during the Joshua Tree sessions that did not make it on the album 20 years ago. Thank God for the re-release.
Now I bought Joshua Tree in 87′. I had a college sized album cover poster on my dorm wall. I went to see them like 3 times in one year. So you could say I was/am a fan. But even I question the necessity of the re release. How come this song was not included when they issued the
u2 ipod and their entire catalog through itunes ? Oh it wasn’t finished at the time. Well.

The song ain’t bad. Bono wants to know what you think. Watch the video then post a comment.

If you are 12 and you don’t have the Joshua Tree now is a good time to get it. If your name is Chris Martin and you think your band is making epic-sweeping-heartfelt-arena-rock-anthems, you should really get this record. Because Joshua Tree accomplished all those things with out the benefit of having the Joshua Tree as a guideline.

Revenge of the Candians: Bran Van 3000

True Story: When I was in the 4th grade, my teacher Mrs Babbit told us that the Canadians were coming from Canadia to teach us the metric system. I freaked the fuck out. I’m 10 years old from the suburbs of New York I don’t know what the metric system is, much less what a Canadian is. I’m sure I just learned how to tell time on a analog clock and now I am in jeopardy of being late for everything and not getting the correct change back at the store. It was so bad Mrs Babbit had to send a letter home to my mother and explain why I was so upset.

Fast forward a few years later and I come to grips with my prejudice. I even had a Canadian friend in college, Canadian Dave.

My point is Bran Van 3000 is back from Montreal. They got a new website . And that’s nice. They also have a new song “Call Me”. Which samples and reconstructs the Spinners “I’ll Be Around”. Which is goes to what I been telling you people. It’s all about the classic soul people!

And how could you be mad at this old track? Answer: You Can’t.

DYHT? Los Mono

It’s fall now. For real this time. So I have to pull out sweaters and throw out unused drink tickets from events that I probably did not go to anyway. While I was cleaning off my desk deciding which cd’s to round file I found Los Mono. Score one for the good guys. Again, I am not bi-lingual, but this record is kinda funky so you don’t need to understand. Just dance. This reminds me, what happened to Kinky?

R. Kelly Strikes Again

R. Kelly is so good that he gives me a warm fuzzy feeling deep down inside. More contemporary R&B should be this earnest. Shit… come to think about it more people should be this earnest.

Do You Remember Rock & Roll?

If not, let the Alabama Shakes remind you. They’re selling out shows across the country and their debut album isn’t even out for another couple months. I managed to see these blues-infused soul grabbers play a jam packed show at the Indy in San Francisco last night. Best overpriced scalped ticket I ever bought! Don’t [...]

Continuing work on my best of heard in 2011, next up is M83  “Midnight City”. My complete spotify playlist can be heard here. Love Letter from the West Coast

Oh, hey there, East Coast! Looks like you had a bit of an earthquake, huh? Don’t worry, I’m not gonna razz you about it. You’re ill-equipped for the tremors. A big quake would be way more catastrophic there than it would be here. You’re right to be a little jumpy about it. Well, I’m no [...]

Did You Hear That: Adele “21″ a brief review

From the first beat of “Rolling in the Deep,” the first track on Adele’s new album, “21”, it is clear that even at such a young age (all of 22 now), singer/songwriter Adele continues to be a force stronger than she may know. As “21” dips into the style of the country South with a [...]

So Sayeth Pam: The Raveonettes “Forget That You’re Young”

I like a young American band that makes vintage-sounding reverbalicious melodies. Specifically if those bands are Crystal Stilts, Vivian Girls or Dum Dum Girls. Call me a nationalist but I just happen to prefer their take on fuzz pop to that of their Danish predecessors, the Raveonettes. Which is not to say I dislike the [...]
