As the sun sets on the rest of my youth. I wanted to shine the light on to the music that John Hughes movies championed way back when. John Hughes knew the importance of using contemporary music to help tell a story earlier than most. Way before soundtracks were just a avenue for majors to dump their C-list roster artist. and Way before indie films were the only place quirky singer song writers or accordion players had a forum.Along with his music supervisors David Anderle ( Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles) , Jimmy Iovine, yes that one ( Sixteen Candles ) and whomever and the insight to choose Yello and Dream Academy for Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, John Hughes was clearly ahead of the curve connecting to his audience through music.
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off – Dream Academy’s Smiths Cover of “Please Please Let Me Get What I Want”
16 Candles -Thompson Twins “If You Were Here” ( en espanol)
Pretty In Pink – Psychedelic Furs ” Pretty In Pink” – I know Hughes did’nt direct PIP but he wrote it and given his track record I gotta think he had specific tracks in mind.
Of course there are dozens ( hundreds? ) of tracks I have overlooked.
RIP
