The Myspace Music Tour featuring Justice, Chromeo and DJ Mhendi was purely awesome. At first when my friend, Carol and I walked into the event I was skeptical, because it was in the overpopulated Madison Square Garden, however the WaMu theater is a rather cute and quaint space.
Basically….there was no assigned seating because everyone was too busy girating and dancing. I tried to get into the dance pit but in fear of getting trampled by 6′5 hipsters, I stuck to snapping pictures in the front row. Well enough about the venue space….on to the acts!
DJ Mhendi was cool…he had a nice beat and got the crowd going, however he wasn’t that memorable. I remember he did a a remix of MIA’s Bamboo Banger, which was pretty dope. He had some crazy strobe light effects going on during his set. Overall, it was pretty snazzy.
Chromeo was incredible. They performed their hits “Fancy Footwork, “Bonafied Lovin”, “Mommas Boy” and my personal favorite “Tenderoni”. The sound was mind-blowing. Chromeo’s mix of eletrofunk and hiphop stylings are truly amazing and unlike anything Ive heard before. I absolutely loved their vocals and the usage of the voice warping “talk box”. I couldn’t believe the group only consisted of two guys! It was very cool. Chromeo captivated me with their flawless beats and dynamic stage energy.
So as the stage crew was setting up for Justice, I noticed that the hipsters definatly started emerging to the front. The crowd was an eclectic mix of 17 yr old budding hipsters and American Apparal rejects. I never saw that many Deep V Neck Tees and Ray Bans in my life as I did at this concert. I even got hit on by a 17 yr old in zebra pants when he tried to raise my hand up in the air. Carol and I were equally frightened but I think I scared the shit out of him when I threatened to smash his face.
Enough banter about the crowd…now on to Justice! They kicked off their set with “Waters of Nazareth” and then slowly transitioned into an awe-inspiring remix of “DANCE” and “DVMO”. They also did 3 encores…..THREE!!!!!!! The amps and lights were flashing everywhere and the air reeked of cheap weed. My friend Carol is a bigger Justice fan than I and these were her comments that pretty much summed up their set, “I feel like their set design was excellently constructed and totally worked in harmony with the music. It became as much a club setting as a concert.” Ultimately, Justice’s whole set had a cool no holds barred underground feel.
The whole ambiance combined with Justice’s repetitive but never lackluster beats made me forget I was in Madison Square Garden.
