Reports here that Lil Wayne is due to sell upwards of 900,000 copies of “Tha Carter III” this week. That is despite of Mr. Waynes protest against the mixtape dj’s unfairly profitting on his music and other album leaks. Lil Wayne could also surpass Kanye West 1st week sales of “Graduation” which reached 956,000 copies. Which should prompt some interesting blow back from Mr.West.
Obviously an album leaking on the internet in today’s climate can create a buzz to boost sales. Although “Tha Carter III” was long over due and highly anticipated. So why are label’s freaking out?
Do labels freak out because they think the leak will cut in to the profits from thier downloads and physical cds? Or do Labels freak out and push up dates to take advantage of the buzz that the leaks create?
Are there examples of a label strategically leaking an album to boost sales? Would any label admit that?
