Long Live Old Souls

Musically speaking, Amy Winehouse’s addictions did her in long ago.

We all waited around for a follow-up to her 2006 album, Back to Black. But as the years went by with no new records and a lot of cancelled concerts, I think we all knew where this story was going. Maybe two albums was all she had in her. I mean, what kind of songs would a well-adjusted clean-and-sober Amy Winehouse write anyway? I’d rather not speculate.

This is not to say that an artist needs to be drug-addled mess to make good music. I’m just saying that an artist like her — who knows how express genuine human emotion — is a rare and fleeting thing. Rare, but thankfully, not non-existent.

Enter the Shakes. An ocean of gratitude to Aquarium Drunkard for bringing my attention to this as-yet unsigned band from Athens, Alabama.

I know it’s a little odd to draw comparisons between a solo artist and a band, but I first heard the Shakes right around the time I found out Amy Winehouse died and was struck by the similarities. They’re both authentically soulful and they both sound like they’ve been around the block. The Shakes, however, are much more bluesy and hopefully a lot less self-destructive. Vocally, lead singer Brittany Howard bears a little more resemblance to Janis Joplin — another member of the infamous 27 Club. Let’s just hope she’s around longer than that.

So Sayeth Pam: Tangled Up in the 80s

Today is Bob Dylan’s 70th birthday. Every major and minor news outlet is rhapsodizing about his long and storied career. But when your career is as long and as storied as Dylan’s, you’re bound to release some clunkers every now and then. Plus, as the Onion points out, he has done some weird shit.

Sooooo in the middle of the eighties, Bob Dylan released a very eighties album called Empire Burlesque. Reviews were mixed at best, but the one big single from that record is still, to this day, one of my guilty pleasures. And in the interest of celebrating the good, the bad and the ugly side of our favorite musicians, I present to you the video for “Tight Connection to My Heart (Has Anyone Seen My Love),” directed by none other than Paul Schrader. Happy Birthday, Bob!

Do You Remember Rock & Roll?

If not, let the Alabama Shakes remind you. They’re selling out shows across the country and their debut album isn’t even out for another couple months. I managed to see these blues-infused soul grabbers play a jam packed show at the Indy in San Francisco last night. Best overpriced scalped ticket I ever bought! Don’t [...]

Did You Hear That? Best of 2011 Part 2 M83 – “Midnight City”

Continuing work on my best of heard in 2011, next up is M83  “Midnight City”. My complete spotify playlist can be heard here. Separating the fact that this song is used in a Victoria’s Secret commercial. it’s still pretty great. It was produced by  Justin Meldal Johnson who also produced my favorite Big Sir remix [...]

Love Letter from the West Coast

Oh, hey there, East Coast! Looks like you had a bit of an earthquake, huh? Don’t worry, I’m not gonna razz you about it. You’re ill-equipped for the tremors. A big quake would be way more catastrophic there than it would be here. You’re right to be a little jumpy about it. Well, I’m no [...]

Did You Hear That: Adele “21″ a brief review

From the first beat of “Rolling in the Deep,” the first track on Adele’s new album, “21”, it is clear that even at such a young age (all of 22 now), singer/songwriter Adele continues to be a force stronger than she may know. As “21” dips into the style of the country South with a [...]

So Sayeth Pam: The Raveonettes “Forget That You’re Young”

I like a young American band that makes vintage-sounding reverbalicious melodies. Specifically if those bands are Crystal Stilts, Vivian Girls or Dum Dum Girls. Call me a nationalist but I just happen to prefer their take on fuzz pop to that of their Danish predecessors, the Raveonettes. Which is not to say I dislike the [...]
